Inside the Author’s Head – Den Patrick

March 5, 2014

Last year The Eloquent Page ran a series of interviews  based on my favourite part of Inside The Actors Studio. Not only was this a great opportunity for the interviewees to get creative with their answers, it also provided some nice insights into what makes a whole bucket-load of authory types tick. Recently I thought it might be nice to resurrect this feature and seeing as Den Patrick has got a new book out imminently, I decided it might be an idea to pick his brains.

Without further ado then, over to Mr Patrick…

Q1. What is your favorite word?

I’m a big fan of susurrus, but I also really like solemnity. Umbral is good too.

Q2. What is your least favorite word?

Rent.

Q3. How has social media helped your career?

I honestly don’t have a clue. I try and stay upbeat and positive on Twitter, I think people respond to that. Facebook is close friends and family only (as of about a year ago). Pintrest helps me marshal my thoughts, visual thoughts, anyway.

Q4. What would you say are the downsides to social media in your career?

Seeing how atrociously people behave online. In general, and to women in particular.

Q5. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I’d be a billionaire, philanthropist, playboy, weapons designer.

Q6. What profession would you not like to do?

Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Q7. What is your favorite curse word?

Obviously I am a monument of zen-like calm at all times, where ever I am. If I were to drop a curse I’d likely say ‘For fuck’s sake.’

Q8. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

God: Could you pop back down there with this halo and tell people I never signed off on the print edition of the Bible? All the homophobic sections were cut from the manuscript I saw.

Me: I don’t know, God. That’s kinda of a big job for-

God: I’ll reincarnate you as Tony Stark.

Me: For fuck’s sake. Fine, I’ll do it.

Thanks for your time Den.

Den’s next book, The Boy With the Porcelain Blade, is due for release on March 20th. Look out for a review on the site soon.
